Cuckoo’s Nest Notes
Theme: Emasculation

  • "He's nailed like that on the wall, like a stuffed trophy" (15)
  • Confinement symbolizes emaculation:
-allusion to Jesus
- effect: a humble figure - humility is emasculation

  • the nurse would get doctors fired until she san control more easily
  • "The worker takes the scalpel and slices up the front of old Blastic with a clean swing and the old man stops thrashing around. I expect to be sick, but there's no blood or innards falling out like I was looking
to see - just a shower of rust and ashes, and now and again a piece of wire or glass" (81).
  • "Old Rawler. Cut both nuts off and bled to death, sitting right on the can in the latrine, half a dozen people in there with him didn't know it till he fell off to the floor, dead" (115).
  • Pg. 161
- McMurphy drops the cards - symbol of his losing his masculinity

Lynn Spann, Leana Scherer, Ryan Margheim, and (I don't remember her name) These are some of our quotes from One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. Our motif was power/control/the institution

pg. 238- " a prison mill stamping out license plates" - creating uniform patients transforming them into 'individuals' according to their standards.
pg. 239- "I'd hunkered in my chair in the corner for so long that it was hard to stand straight very long" - fighting the conditioning of the nurse/hospital
pg. 244-" I hear them in there pry up his forehead like a manhole cover, clash and snarl of jammed cogs"- fix men like machinery, having no emotion
pg. 244-"The floor's cold, frosted, crackling. Up above the light whines, tuve lond and white and icy. Can smell the graphite slave, like the smell in a garage. Can smell acid of fear"- fear and control created through impersonal contact
pg.244-"Anointest my head with conductant. Do I get a crown of thorns?"- gains salvation from thier confinement

pg. 104-"'I don't know Mack,' Scanton finally says, 'I'm pretty used to seeing that
six o'clocknews. And if switching times would really mess up the schedule as Miss Ratched says-'"- Miss Ratched and the institution have made the patients believe that they need to stay with routine; the patients will believe anything they say
pg. 107- "It's still a risk my friend. She always has the capacity to make things worse for us. A baseball game isn't worth te risk."- They are giving up their leisurely activities out of fear
